Arothren
The Arothren are a humanoid species from the floating continent of Frith. Originally a peaceful civilisation, they have been all-but wiped out.
Physiology
The individual Arothren is capable of converting sunlight into an augmented variety of electricity known as J-Energy. This process causes their hair to glow luminous and allows them to power various devices.
Upon death, their body secretes a resin that coccoons them. In this state, they still produce a small amount of J-Energy.
Their phsyical ability is actually quite poor. They have rather underdeveloped hindlimbs and require special equipment to maintain a bipedal stance. They are also incapable of verbal communication and rely on various gestures to relay information.
History
Centuries ago, the floating continent, Frith, was home to the peaceful Arothren civilisation. The continent itself was kept aloft by the hundreds of ancestors whose coccooned remains has been enshrined in the continent's core, forever bathed in sunlight through an intricate system of mirrors.
Their peaceful existence was eventually disturbed by invaders who discovered that the coccooning process could be triggered earlier in an Arothren's life, resulting in a higher J-Energy output in that state.
Frith was converted into a apocalyptic weapon that ultimately lead to the destruction of the lower world, while the invaders who perpetrated this seemingly disappeared completely.
Now all that remains are thousands of coccooned Arothren, now dormant as the machinery created to house them lays in disarray and sunlight no longer shines upon them, barely powering Frith as the continent drifts through the sky over an endless ocean.
